Newsprint production in India

Newsprint is a low cost paper fit for newspaper which has low archival quality. It is invented by Charles Fenerty in 1844 in Canada. It is made by mechanical milling process without chemical process to remove lignin for wood pulp. Newsprint is traditionally made from soft wood. Nowadays, newsprint is also made from recycled fibres. In India, there are 62 mills that produce newsprint are active, 36 mills discontinued & 23 mills have closed operations.

They produce 42 to 48 gsm standard Newsprint. The total production of newsprint in India is around 2.0 million tpa while the demand is around 2.7 million tonnes. The industry is growing at a rate of 5% and is expected to reach 5.5 mtpa by 2025.
